A Royal Experience: My Visit to Windsor Castle
As the first stop on my three-site day trip from London, Windsor Castle set the tone for a day filled with history, grandeur, and fascinating discoveries. Stepping into the castle grounds felt like walking into a living piece of British history, as this is not only one of the oldest but also the largest occupied castle in the world.
The sheer scale of Windsor Castle is breathtaking. From the moment I arrived, the towering stone walls, grand entrance, and well-manicured gardens made it clear why this has been a preferred residence of British monarchs for centuries. The highlight for me was St. George’s Chapel, an architectural masterpiece where many royal ceremonies have taken place, including the weddings of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II.
Inside the castle, the lavish State Apartments left a lasting impression. The rooms are adorned with stunning artwork, intricate tapestries, and ornate furnishings, making it easy to imagine the grandeur of royal life. The history here is palpable, with each room telling a different story of the monarchy’s past.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my visit was witnessing the Changing of the Guard. Seeing the precision and tradition of this ceremony added to the immersive experience of being at a royal residence.
If you’re traveling by car, you’ll find parking at Windsor Castle, which makes it easy to explore at your own pace without worrying about being tied to a tour group or bus schedule. It’s definitely a site where taking your time to absorb all the details is worth it. Windsor Castle is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by the British monarchy.
