Stepping Back in Time: My Visit to the Roman Baths in Bath

As the final stop on my three-site day trip from London, the Roman Baths in Bath, Somerset, provided a fascinating glimpse into ancient history. After exploring Windsor Castle and Stonehenge earlier in the day, this visit felt like a perfect way to end the journey—immersed in the remnants of Roman Britain.

Walking into the Roman Baths, I was immediately struck by the grandeur and preservation of the site. The main Great Bath, with its steaming green waters, looked like something straight out of history books. Though visitors can no longer bathe in the waters, simply standing by the pool and imagining Romans socializing here over 2,000 years ago was incredible.

The museum offered deeper insight into the lives of the people who once frequented these baths. From ancient artifacts like coins and jewelry to the famous “curse tablets”—messages inscribed on lead asking the gods for revenge—it was fascinating to see how much of their world has been preserved. The engineering of the original hot spring system, still functioning today, was particularly impressive.

One of the highlights for me was tasting the mineral-rich spa water at the end of the tour. While the taste was… unique, it was an interesting way to connect with the history of the place!

Bath itself is a beautiful city, and the Roman Baths are an unmissable experience. Whether you’re a history lover or simply curious about how the Romans lived, this site offers an immersive and well-curated journey into the past. If you’re driving, there’s parking available, and having your own car means you can explore the rest of Bath at your own pace after visiting the baths.
