Two Days in Timeless Savannah, Georgia: A Memorable Stop on Our Road Trip to Orlando
In the summer of 2021, we embarked on a family road trip from Easton, Maryland, to Orlando, Florida, filled with excitement, sunshine, and spontaneous discoveries. On our way down south, we planned a two-day stopover in Savannah, Georgia, and it turned out to be one of the most enriching and scenic highlights of the entire journey.
🛣️ Road Tripping South: Why We Chose Savannah
Savannah has long been on my travel wish list—a city rich in Southern charm, cobblestone streets, moss-draped oak trees, and deep-rooted history. It offered the perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and education for a brief stop. As a history lover, I was drawn to its preserved colonial architecture and pivotal role in American history. And of course, we were eager to stretch our legs and explore after hours on the road.
🏨 Our Stay in Savannah
For convenience and comfort, we booked accommodations within the historic district, which allowed us to walk to many of the city’s top attractions. The warm hospitality and antebellum elegance of our lodging added to the experience. Even in just two days, we felt deeply immersed in the soulful rhythm of the city.
🏛️ Exploring the Historic District
We spent our time wandering through Savannah’s 22 picturesque squares, each with its own story and charm. Highlights included:
- Chippewa Square, famously featured in the movie Forrest Gump
- Reynolds Square, home to the John Wesley monument
- Madison Square, where we admired the stunning Gothic Revival architecture of St. John the Baptist Cathedral
The city’s walkable grid layout, shaded by Spanish moss and lined with historic homes, made every stroll feel like a journey back in time.
⚓ A Scenic Riverfront Stroll
No visit to Savannah is complete without a walk along River Street, where cobblestone pathways meet vibrant shops and restaurants overlooking the Savannah River. We watched cargo ships pass by while enjoying local bites and souvenirs from charming riverfront vendors. The combination of history, water views, and Southern flavor made this area one of our favorite hangouts.
🚢 A Cruise to Old Fort Jackson
One of the most unforgettable moments was a boat cruise along the Savannah River to Old Fort Jackson, Georgia’s oldest standing brick fort. We learned about its strategic importance during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The cannon-firing demonstration was a thrilling experience, especially for the kids—and a vivid reminder of Savannah’s military past.
🗺️ Visiting Tybee Island Lighthouse
On our second day, we made a quick getaway to Tybee Island, just 20 minutes outside the city. There, we visited the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum, where we climbed to the top for panoramic views of the Atlantic. It was the perfect way to end our short visit—sea breeze, history, and serenity all in one.
🍽️ Southern Flavors We Loved
Savannah is a city that feeds your soul—and your stomach! We indulged in:
- Shrimp and grits
- Savannah red rice
- Pecan pie
- Sweet tea (of course!)
The local cuisine was a flavorful celebration of the Lowcountry’s African and Southern culinary heritage.
🚗 Onward to Orlando
After two days of discovery, history, and great food, we hit the road again, continuing our journey to Orlando, Florida. But Savannah left a lasting impression—a city that gracefully combines the old with the new, offering something for every traveler.
✨ Final Thoughts
Though it was just a stopover, our two days in Savannah, Georgia, felt like a journey of its own. For anyone road-tripping down the East Coast, I wholeheartedly recommend making Savannah part of your itinerary. It’s more than a detour—it’s a destination that stays with you.
