πŸš— A Special Road Trip to Durham, NC

From my home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I set out on a meaningful road trip this July to Durham, North Carolina, a city rich in history, culture, and personal significance. My daughter, a soon-to-be senior in college, had just begun a month-long research opportunity at Duke University Medical Center β€” and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit her and explore a city I had long been curious about.

I was in Durham from July 11th to July 13th, 2025, and though the visit was brief, it was packed with heartwarming family time, delicious food, and historical exploration.

🏨 Comfortable Lodging at Comfort Inn

For this visit, I chose to stay at the Comfort Inn, which offered everything I needed: a clean and quiet room, a great location close to downtown, and excellent service. After long days exploring the city and spending time with my daughter, it was the perfect place to relax and recharge.

πŸ₯ Proud Dad Moments at Duke University Medical Center

Arriving in Durham, my first stop was to see my daughter. Seeing her immersed in her research project at one of the top medical centers in the country was a proud and emotional moment. Duke’s medical campus was buzzing with brilliance, and it was inspiring to witness my daughter thriving in such a competitive, professional environment just before entering her final year of college this fall.

🍽️ Savoring the Flavors of Durham

Durham isn’t just a city of history β€” it’s a culinary destination in its own right. I made it a point to try a variety of local favorites, and every meal was memorable:

  • Grub Durham – A trendy brunch spot with creative Southern-inspired comfort food. The energy here was as flavorful as the food.
  • Lime & Lemon Indian Grill – Fresh, fragrant, and absolutely satisfying. Their modern take on Indian cuisine was a hit.
  • Alpaca Peruvian Charcoal Kitchen (9th Street) – A delicious lunch featuring Peruvian rotisserie chicken with bold, smoky flavors.
  • Bleu Olive Mediterranean Bistro – Refined Mediterranean dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. The lamb and mezze platter were standouts.
  • Szechuan Mansion Hotpot – A spicy, interactive dining experience that was both flavorful and fun β€” a great way to end the day.

Each of these places offered a unique taste of Durham’s diverse food scene and made the trip even more special.

πŸ›οΈ Exploring Durham’s Deep Historical Roots

While spending time with my daughter was the heart of the trip, I also used this opportunity to dive into Durham’s rich history. Here are some of the key places I visited:

πŸ“ Historic Stagville

Once one of the South’s largest plantations, Historic Stagville tells the important story of slavery in North Carolina. Touring the preserved slave quarters and hearing the stories of those who lived there was deeply moving and informative.

πŸ“ Black Wall Street (Parrish Street)

Walking along Parrish Street, I visited the historical markers of Black Wall Street, a hub of African American entrepreneurship in the early 20th century. This district is a powerful reminder of resilience and community strength.

πŸ“ Bennett Place

Located just a few miles from downtown, Bennett Place is the site of the largest troop surrender of the Civil War. It was surreal to stand on those grounds and imagine the impact that surrender had on ending the conflict.

πŸ’ Final Reflections

This weekend in Durham was more than just a getaway β€” it was a deeply personal journey that blended pride, discovery, and reflection. Watching my daughter take a bold step into her future while walking through sites that defined the past made for a weekend I’ll never forget.

Whether you’re planning a family visit, looking for a history-packed weekend, or simply chasing good food and warm Southern hospitality, Durham delivers on all fronts.
