A Memorable Summer Weekend in Harrisburg & Hershey, PA Before College Begins
Weekend getaway from Easton, MD to Harrisburg and Hershey, PA in Summer 2025 — exploring historical sites, chocolate fun, and family moments before college life begins.
A Special Summer Trip Before a New Chapter
With my last son heading off to college in August 2025, I wanted to squeeze in one more meaningful family trip. We decided on a weekend getaway to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — a city steeped in history and charm. From our home in Easton, Maryland, the drive was smooth and scenic, making it an easy and accessible destination for a quick escape.
Exploring the Rich History of Harrisburg
As a history enthusiast, Harrisburg did not disappoint. The city offers a blend of American heritage, impressive architecture, and scenic views along the Susquehanna River.
🏛️ Pennsylvania State Capitol
Our first stop was the magnificent Pennsylvania State Capitol, often hailed as one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the country. The guided tour revealed ornate interiors, incredible artwork, and stories that brought Pennsylvania’s political history to life.
🏞️ National Civil War Museum
Next, we visited the National Civil War Museum, which offered a balanced and moving narrative of one of the most pivotal periods in U.S. history. The museum’s exhibits were immersive and educational — perfect for sparking thoughtful conversations as a family.
🚶 Riverfront Park
We took some time to stroll through Riverfront Park, enjoying the views, monuments, and open green space. The peaceful setting gave us a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come — and how exciting the road ahead will be for my son.
A Sweet Detour: Hershey, PA
No trip to the region is complete without stopping by Hershey, Pennsylvania — just a short drive from Harrisburg. Known as The Sweetest Place on Earth, Hershey was a hit for the entire family.
🍫 Hershey’s Chocolate World
We explored Hershey’s Chocolate World, where we learned about the chocolate-making process and even crafted our own candy bars. The experience was both fun and nostalgic — a true highlight of the trip.
🎢 Hersheypark Adventures
We also spent a few hours at Hersheypark, enjoying the thrilling rides, lively atmosphere, and summer treats. It was a playful contrast to the more reflective historical sites — and a perfect way to let loose before the college countdown begins.
Family, History, and Chocolate — A Perfect Blend
This short summer trip was more than just sightseeing. It was a chance to pause and be present — to soak in the moments before life changes once again. Harrisburg offered the history, Hershey brought the fun, and together they made for an unforgettable weekend.
