After exploring the history and culture of Salt Lake City, it was time to continue my multi-state travel adventure out West. Evanston, Wyoming, just across the Utah border, became my first destination outside of Utah. The excitement of leaving one state behind and entering a brand-new one marked a special milestone in my 50-states journey.

The road trip from Salt Lake City to Evanston is about 80 miles west on I-80 and takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes by car. The journey itself is part of the adventure—rolling mountains, wide-open skies, and stretches of scenic highway that make you feel like you’re diving deeper into the American West.

As I drove, the Utah landscape slowly gave way to the rugged beauty of Wyoming. The border crossing itself may be simple, but for me, it symbolized a step further into this multi-state experience I’ve been building one destination at a time.

First Impressions of Evanston, Wyoming

Evanston may be a small city, but it packs a charm that reflects Wyoming’s frontier spirit. Walking around downtown, I noticed historic brick buildings, local shops, and a slower pace of life compared to bustling Salt Lake City.

The city has strong railroad roots, once serving as a key stop for the Union Pacific Railroad. That history still shows today in its preserved roundhouse and rail yards, which are worth visiting if you’re interested in America’s westward expansion.
