My Trip to Rome, Italy: A Journey Through Time

In 2024, I finally made my way to the Eternal City—Rome, Italy. A place where history, faith, and food blend in an almost magical way. From the moment I arrived, Rome felt like walking into a living museum, with every cobbled street echoing with stories from thousands of years ago.

Arrival and First Impressions

Rome greeted me with sunshine, chaos, and charm. The energy was palpable—from the bustling piazzas to the melodic hum of Italian being spoken around every corner. I chose to stay in an Airbnb instead of a hotel, just to feel a little more at home and not like a typical tourist. It was the perfect way to soak in the rhythm of Roman daily life. I had a cozy little apartment tucked into a local neighborhood, where I could shop at nearby markets, greet the barista at the corner café, and return each evening with a sense of familiarity.

Getting Around

Rome is a city meant to be explored, and getting around was surprisingly easy thanks to the underground train system. I used the metro frequently—it was efficient, affordable, and connected me to just about everywhere I wanted to go. Whether I was heading to the Vatican, the Colosseum, or across the Tiber to Trastevere, the metro got me there quickly. I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city—it’s a smart way to save time and avoid traffic. Uber and taxi services were also available, and while I did use them occasionally, I relied on them sparingly—mostly when traveling late at night or when I was too tired to walk.

Ancient Rome: Colosseum and Roman Forum

No trip to Rome would be complete without stepping into the grandeur of the Colosseum. Standing inside this ancient amphitheater, I could almost hear the roar of the crowds and feel the weight of its long, complex history. Just across the street, I explored the Roman Forum—ruins that once formed the heart of ancient political and social life. Walking among the columns and arches, I was struck by the scale and ambition of Roman civilization.

The Vatican: A Spiritual Experience

As a religious person, visiting Vatican City was especially meaningful. I toured St. Peter’s Basilica, marveled at Michelangelo’s Pietà, and climbed to the top of the dome for panoramic views over the city. The Vatican Museums left me speechless, especially when I entered the Sistine Chapel. Seeing Michelangelo’s ceiling in person was a moment I won’t forget—it felt sacred, like stepping into a timeless masterpiece.

Exploring the Jewish Quarter

One of the most moving parts of my trip was visiting the Jewish Quarter—Il Ghetto Ebraico di Roma. I wanted to experience a deeper layer of the city’s history, especially the segregation imposed on the Jewish community in 1555. Walking through the quiet streets where Jews were once confined and restricted by papal decree, I reflected on the centuries of resilience and faith that have endured in this space. Today, the area is vibrant and proud, filled with synagogues, cultural heritage, and incredible kosher restaurants.

I started one morning there with a lovely kosher breakfast at Pollaria, a stylish kosher food, coffee, and wine restaurant. The place had a modern yet warm atmosphere, and the food was fresh and flavorful—perfect to start the day. Sitting there, sipping coffee and watching life go by in this historic neighborhood, was a beautiful way to connect with both past and present.

Later, I tried local specialties like carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style fried artichokes), and continued exploring the charm and rich history that defines this powerful corner of Rome.

Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps

One evening, I joined the crowds at the Trevi Fountain, tossed in a coin, and made a wish—because, of course, I had to ensure I’d return someday. From there, I wandered up the Spanish Steps, catching my breath and admiring the view from the top as the sun set over Rome. The atmosphere was vibrant yet romantic, with street musicians playing and couples enjoying gelato.

Food, Glorious Food (Especially Pizza!)

Rome fed both my soul and stomach. I indulged in classic dishes like carbonara, cacio e pepe, and supplì. But one of the real highlights of my culinary experience was the pizza—so many kinds of pizza. From the thin, crispy Roman-style pizzas served straight out of wood-fired ovens, to thick slices of pizza al taglio cut and weighed by the piece, I made it a mission to try as many as I could. Each neighborhood had its own gems, and each pizza its own personality—Margherita, Diavola, funghi, prosciutto e rucola… I lost count but not interest. Every bite was perfection.

I had my fair share of espresso and gelato too—hazelnut and pistachio became my go-to flavors. Dining outdoors in charming trattorias, surrounded by locals and fellow travelers, made every meal a memory. Being in an Airbnb also meant I could try a few things from the local markets and make simple meals myself—just another way I felt more like a local than a guest.

Trastevere and Beyond

One of my favorite evenings was spent in Trastevere, a neighborhood known for its bohemian vibe and lively nightlife. I got lost in its maze of narrow alleys, stumbled upon hidden churches, and eventually found a small family-run restaurant that served the best gnocchi I’ve ever had. Even there, pizza was on the table—because when in Rome, why not?

Reflections

My 2024 trip to Rome was everything I had hoped for and more. It deepened my appreciation for history, faith, and culture. Rome isn’t just a city—it’s a feeling, an experience, a journey through layers of time. And as promised by the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain, I know I’ll return.
