Cannon Beach, Oregon: Standing Face to Face with Haystack Rock
My Oregon journey began in Portland, but winter travel had other plans. A flight cancellation and rescheduling on January 25 unexpectedly opened up an extra day—one that I chose to spend heading west toward the Pacific Ocean.
That unplanned window led me to Cannon Beach, one of Oregon’s most iconic coastal destinations. Known for its artistic spirit, dramatic shoreline, and unmistakable landmark, Cannon Beach quickly became one of the highlights of my time in the Beaver State.
The Coastal Drive: Heading Toward the Pacific
The drive toward Cannon Beach was part of the reward. Coastal highways curved gently through forests and open stretches, with shifting elevations that hinted at the ocean ahead. As the air grew colder and heavier with salt, the Pacific announced itself long before it came fully into view.
This is one of those drives where you instinctively slow down—not because of traffic, but because the landscape demands attention.
A Short Coastal Drive: Seaside to Cannon Beach
After exploring Seaside, I continued south along the coast toward Cannon Beach. The drive between the two towns is remarkably short—just 9 miles, about a 15-minute drive—making it easy to experience both in one outing.
The goal was intentional: two coastal cities, two distinct beach experiences, all in one continuous coastal drive.
First Impressions: Cannon Beach’s Quiet, Refined Charm
Cannon Beach immediately felt smaller, quieter, and more intentional than many coastal towns. There’s an understated elegance here—an artsy, upscale character shaped by galleries, boutique hotels, and carefully preserved natural beauty.
Even in winter, the town felt welcoming. The absence of crowds only heightened its romantic, photogenic appeal. This was clearly a place designed not for rush, but for pause.
The Main Attraction: Haystack Rock at Low Tide
The reason most travelers come to Cannon Beach—and the reason I did—stands unmistakably along the shoreline: Haystack Rock.
Rising dramatically from the sand, this massive sea stack dominates the landscape. Timing was everything on my visit. With the tide extremely low, the beach opened up in a way that allowed me to walk unusually close to the rock—close enough that it truly felt like I could reach out and touch it.
Standing near Haystack Rock at low tide is a powerful experience. The scale of it is humbling. The surrounding tidal pools, exposed by the receding ocean, added layers of texture and life to the beach. Even without saying a word, the place commands respect.
Walking the Beach: Winter Stillness on the Oregon Coast
I spent time walking along the expansive beach, taking in the rhythm of the waves and the openness of the shoreline. Winter had thinned the crowds, leaving behind a rare kind of solitude.
There’s something deeply grounding about an empty beach in cold weather. No noise beyond the surf. No distractions. Just ocean, sky, and time. Cannon Beach in winter strips the experience down to its essentials—and that’s exactly what makes it special.

What began as a travel disruption turned into one of the most memorable moments of my Oregon journey. Cannon Beach reminded me that flexibility often unlocks the most meaningful experiences.
Standing face to face with Haystack Rock, walking an almost empty shoreline, and feeling the power of the Pacific at low tide—this was Oregon at its most honest and unforgettable.
