A Week in Cleveland: Rock, Steel, and Surprises

I spent a week exploring Cleveland, Ohio — a city that often flies under the radar, yet left me genuinely impressed with its mix of grit, charm, and culture. From iconic landmarks to soulful cuisine, here’s a look at how my week unfolded in “The Forest City.”

Day 1: First Impressions and a Walk Downtown

I arrived in Cleveland with open expectations, and the first thing that struck me was how walkable and inviting downtown is. I stayed near Public Square, and my first evening stroll took me past historic buildings, the impressive Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, and the vibrant lights of Playhouse Square. I capped the night with dinner at a local spot serving hearty pierogies — a nod to Cleveland’s Eastern European roots.

Day 2: Rock & Roll and Lake Erie Views

No trip to Cleveland is complete without visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even if you’re not a die-hard music fan, the immersive exhibits — from Elvis’s jumpsuits to hip-hop artifacts — are nothing short of electric. Afterward, I relaxed at Voinovich Bicentennial Park, right on the lakefront. The cool breeze off Lake Erie made it a perfect spot for reflection (and photos).

Day 3: A Dive into Cleveland’s Industrial Past

Cleveland’s history as a steel and manufacturing powerhouse is still visible in the Flats and along the Cuyahoga River. I took a guided tour that traced the city’s evolution from industrial engine to cultural hub. That night, I visited Collision Bend Brewery, housed in a renovated warehouse, where the riverfront views were as good as the locally brewed beer.

Day 4: Museum Mile in University Circle

University Circle is Cleveland’s cultural gem. I spent most of the day at the Cleveland Museum of Art — one of the few world-class art museums that’s free to the public. The Egyptian, African, and Impressionist galleries were standouts. Just steps away is the beautiful Wade Lagoon, a serene spot ideal for an afternoon break.

Day 5: A Taste of Local Flavor

Food in Cleveland is as diverse as its people. I explored West Side Market, a food hall that’s been running since 1912. From fresh produce to Middle Eastern and Latin American specialties, it’s a culinary whirlwind. For lunch, I tried a chicken shawarma wrap and a mango smoothie, then walked it off in the nearby Ohio City neighborhood.

Day 6: Sports and Skyline

Cleveland is a sports town through and through. I toured Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Guardians, and admired the skyline views from the stadium seats. In the evening, I headed to Edgewater Park, a local favorite with a great beach and a famous “Cleveland” script sign for that must-have photo op.

Day 7: Wrapping Up in Tremont

My last full day was spent in the Tremont neighborhood — full of historic churches, indie galleries, and cozy cafes. It has that cool, artsy vibe without feeling pretentious. I had a late brunch at a local café and took one last stroll, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere before heading back to pack.

Final Thoughts

Cleveland surprised me. It’s a city that owns its history while embracing change. It may not always be the first stop on a traveler’s list, but it certainly deserves a place. If you’re looking for a destination with culture, character, and comfort — Cleveland delivers.
