A Stylish Whirlwind: My Day Trip to Milan from Rome 🇮🇹
During my recent stay in Rome, I decided to take a break from the Eternal City’s ancient ruins and hop on a high-speed train for a day trip to Milan—Italy’s fashion capital and a vibrant northern gem. With the Frecciarossa train zipping between the two cities in just under 3 hours, it was surprisingly doable and absolutely worth it.
Morning Arrival & First Impressions
I arrived at Milano Centrale Station just as the city was starting to stir. The station itself is an architectural marvel—massive, majestic, and full of hustle. From there, I made my way straight to the heart of the city: the iconic Piazza del Duomo.
Stepping into the square, I was blown away by the sight of the Duomo di Milano—its white marble facade gleaming under the northern Italian sun. I took some time to admire the details up close and then made my way to the rooftop terraces. The views of the city from the top, framed by the spires and statues, were nothing short of magical.
A Stroll Through Style
Next, I wandered into the glamorous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, right beside the Duomo. The glass-domed shopping arcade felt like a temple to fashion and luxury, with flagship boutiques and cafés exuding Milanese flair. I didn’t splurge on designer wear (though it was tempting!), but I did treat myself to a quick espresso and pastry at a local café—because when in Milan, you sip like the locals.
A Football Fan’s Pilgrimage: San Siro Stadium 🏟️
As a die-hard football fan, there was no way I was leaving Milan without visiting San Siro Stadium—the legendary home of AC Milan and Inter Milan. Just walking up to the colossal structure gave me chills. I joined a stadium tour that took us through the stands, locker rooms, and the edge of the pitch itself. Seeing the trophies, the players’ benches, and soaking in the history of such an iconic venue was a dream come true. It added a completely different, electrifying dimension to my Milan experience.
A Taste of Milan—with a View
Back in the city center and still buzzing from the San Siro experience, I decided to enjoy lunch with a view of the Duomo, since I was already in the area. I headed up to a rooftop restaurant overlooking the grand cathedral and ordered a classic risotto alla milanese paired with a light local wine. The saffron-infused rice was rich and comforting, but it was the view—watching the world pass by beneath the spires of the Duomo—that truly made the meal unforgettable. It was the perfect blend of Milanese flavor and atmosphere.
Later on, I returned to ground level and grabbed a seat at one of the cafés surrounding the piazza. There, I had a delicious pizza while soaking in the vibrant energy of the open square. It was the perfect spot to people-watch—locals crossing paths, tourists snapping selfies, street performers drawing crowds—all under the majestic shadow of the Duomo. It was one of those simple but unforgettable moments that made me feel truly present.
Art & History Stop: The Last Supper
I was lucky to snag a ticket in advance to see Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie. The experience was brief (as they strictly limit time and group size), but incredibly powerful. Seeing the fresco in person gave me a new appreciation for the genius of Leonardo and the cultural richness Milan holds beyond fashion and football.
A Walk in Brera & Time to Head Back
I rounded out my day with a walk through the artsy Brera district, which had a more bohemian feel, full of galleries, quaint boutiques, and quiet streets. It felt like a nice contrast to the glitz of central Milan.
As the afternoon faded, I headed back to Centrale Station and boarded the train to Rome. Though the visit was short, it was the perfect snapshot of Milan’s elegance, creativity, and culture—with a thrilling touch of football history and plenty of culinary pleasure.
Final Thoughts
Milan in a day? It’s absolutely doable, especially with Italy’s high-speed trains. While I couldn’t see everything, I left with a deeper appreciation for a city that often hides its soul behind its stylish surface. Visiting San Siro was a highlight I’ll never forget. Enjoying risotto on a rooftop and pizza on the piazza—each with its own breathtaking view of the Duomo—made the day feel complete. Would I go back? In a heartbeat—next time, maybe for a match night under the lights.
