Exploring Faith and History: My August 2025 Trip to Utah
Continuing my journey across all 50 states, I landed in the Beehive State to explore the spiritual heart of the American West—Salt Lake City, Utah. This trip was more than just sightseeing; it was a deep dive into the legacy of the Mormon faith and the historical roots that shaped this unique region.
Arrival in Salt Lake City: Gateway to the West
In late August 2025, I flew into Salt Lake City International Airport, ready to begin a one-week adventure across Utah and its neighboring states. After picking up my rental car, which would be essential for the multi-state exploration ahead, I checked into my home base for the next few days: the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City.
The location couldn’t have been better—central, walkable, and just a short drive from the major sites I planned to explore.
A Journey Through Faith: Discovering Mormon History and Architecture
One of the primary goals of this leg of my 50 states tour was to explore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly known as the Mormon Church) and its influence on Salt Lake City and Utah as a whole.
From the moment I stepped into the city, I could feel the presence of the Church—not just in buildings, but in the culture, the layout of the city, and even the stories told through historical markers.
Highlights Included:
- Temple Square: Though under renovation, it remained a must-visit. The Salt Lake Temple, Tabernacle, and Assembly Hall offer insights into the pioneering spirit and religious devotion that built this city from desert soil.
- Church History Museum: A rich and immersive experience that gave me a deeper understanding of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and the migration westward that defined Mormon history.
- Conference Center: A modern architectural wonder that seats over 21,000 people and symbolizes the Church’s global outreach.
- Beehive House: Once the residence of Brigham Young, this site gave me a more personal look at the early leadership of the LDS Church.
Exploring Salt Lake City’s Broader Historical Tapestry
While the city is deeply shaped by faith, Salt Lake’s story also includes railroads, pioneer settlements, and a unique cultural blend of old and new.
I made it a mission to visit every major historical site in the Salt Lake City area before moving on to other cities and states. The experience was enriching, thought-provoking, and surprisingly emotional at times. It reminded me that history is best understood on foot, not just in books.
Reflections on Utah and What Comes Next
This trip was more than just checking another state off the list—it was a journey of discovery. Utah challenged my assumptions, deepened my appreciation for American religious history, and offered stunning vistas and architecture grounded in purpose and belief.
As I left Salt Lake City behind, I looked forward to continuing this weeklong road trip into other states nearby—but I carried Utah with me in my thoughts. Its history, its people, and its deep-rooted values had left a mark.
