There are some trips that do not need a week-long itinerary to become unforgettable.
Sometimes, one weekend is enough.
Especially when the destination is New York City and you are traveling with your grown children.
From Friday, July 24 through Sunday, July 26, 2026, we traded our normal weekend routine for a family road trip to one of the world’s most exciting cities.
This trip was about more than visiting New York.
It was about:
- Creating new memories with my grown kids
- Reconnecting with someone from my childhood after more than 40 years
- Experiencing Manhattan beyond a quick day trip
- Testing whether my 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV could handle a real long-distance family road trip
New York City was the destination.
But the memories were the real journey.
🚙 Friday, July 24 — The Road Trip Begins
Easton, Maryland to Manhattan
Starting our NYC adventure from Easton, Maryland, with the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV ready for the road.
At 7:00 AM, we departed Easton, Maryland, and began our drive north toward New York City.
This was not just a family road trip.
It was also a personal test.
Since purchasing my 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV, I had used it primarily for commuting and everyday driving. This trip gave me the opportunity to answer an important question:
Could my EV handle a real highway road trip with passengers, luggage, and city traffic?
Around 8:30–9:15 AM, we stopped for breakfast in northern Delaware before continuing our journey.
That stop was more than just a break from driving. It was part of the experience — slowing down, enjoying the conversation, and appreciating that the journey itself is part of travel.

- Highway efficiency
- Traffic conditions
- Weather impact
Instead of relying on someone else’s review, I wanted my own real-world experience.
Could the Equinox EV become more than a commuter vehicle?
Could it become part of my travel lifestyle?
This New York trip helped answer that question.
🏨 Arriving in Manhattan
Our Home Base: Four Points by Sheraton Midtown Manhattan
Our Midtown Manhattan home base placed us close to the heart of New York City.
One of the best decisions we made was staying in Midtown Manhattan.
The Four Points by Sheraton Midtown Manhattan gave us the perfect location for a short weekend visit.
For a quick trip, location matters.
We wanted to spend our time experiencing New York — not sitting in traffic traveling back and forth from a hotel outside the city.
Once we arrived, the vehicle could rest.
New York became our neighborhood.
We walked.
We explored.
We used the subway.
We experienced the city the way millions of New Yorkers do every day.
🗽 Seeing Lady Liberty From the Water

One of our first major experiences was a Statue of Liberty ferry cruise.
Seeing Lady Liberty from the water was completely different from simply seeing photographs.
Standing in New York Harbor, surrounded by views of Manhattan, created one of those moments where you truly appreciate the history and symbolism of the city.
For me personally, the Statue of Liberty carries special meaning.
As someone who immigrated to America, the image represents opportunity, hope, and the countless stories of people who arrived seeking a better future.
The cruise also included lunch, turning the sightseeing experience into a shared family memory.
It was not just a landmark.
It was a moment.
🌆 Experiencing Midtown Manhattan & Times Square
Walking through Times Square and experiencing the energy of New York City at night.
No New York trip feels complete without experiencing Times Square.
The lights.
The billboards.
The theaters.
The crowds.
The energy.
Times Square is one of those places most people have already seen through movies and television.
But standing there is different.
You feel the movement of the city around you.
Instead of rushing through Times Square, we took time to experience it.
That was one advantage of staying in Manhattan.
We were not trying to see New York in a few hours.
We were living in it for the weekend.
🚶 Hudson Yards & The High Line
Exploring Hudson Yards and walking the famous High Line above Manhattan.
One of the highlights of our Manhattan exploration was visiting Hudson Yards and walking the High Line.
The High Line is a perfect example of how New York continues to reinvent itself.
An old elevated railway was transformed into a beautiful public walking path surrounded by:
- Architecture
- Gardens
- City views
- History
For someone who enjoys walking and exploring cities, it was the perfect experience.
And yes — we definitely got our steps in.
🌉 Saturday, July 25 — Exploring More of New York
A full day of exploring Manhattan, Brooklyn, and some of New York’s most iconic locations.
Saturday was our major exploration day.
We wanted to experience more than just Midtown.
We wanted to see different sides of New York.
🌉 Brooklyn Bridge & DUMBO
Standing near Brooklyn Bridge with unforgettable views of the Manhattan skyline.
Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO gave us another perspective of New York.
From Brooklyn, the Manhattan skyline looks completely different.
The combination of:
- Historic bridge architecture
- East River views
- Modern skyscrapers
creates one of the city’s most recognizable scenes.
🚢 Staten Island Ferry & Lower Manhattan
Viewing Manhattan from the water aboard the Staten Island Ferry.
The Staten Island Ferry allowed us to experience New York from another angle.
The city looks different when you step away from the streets and view it from the harbor.
The skyline, water, and landmarks come together in a way that reminds you why New York remains one of the world’s greatest cities.
🕊️ Remembering History at the 9/11 Memorial
A reflective visit to the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan.
Travel is not only about entertainment.
It is also about understanding history.
The 9/11 Memorial provided a moment of reflection and reminded us of the events that changed America and the world.
Places like this add depth to travel.
❤️ A Reunion More Than 40 Years in the Making
A special reunion with a childhood family friend after more than four decades apart.
One of the most meaningful moments of the entire trip happened away from the famous landmarks.
A childhood family friend who lives in Yonkers, New York, came to see me.
Although we had stayed connected by phone, I had not seen him in over 40 years.
That reunion was unforgettable.
In a city of more than eight million people, a weekend trip brought two childhood friends back together after four decades.
That is what makes travel special.
The places are amazing.
But the people make the memories.
🎭 Broadway Night: Seeing Aladdin
Ending Saturday night with the magic of Broadway and the musical Aladdin.
Saturday night brought another classic New York experience:
Broadway.
We went to see the musical Aladdin.
Walking through the theater district at night is an experience by itself.
The lights.
The theaters.
The excitement.
Sharing Broadway with my grown kids made the experience even more special.
👨👦👦 Traveling With My Grown Kids
Creating memories in New York City with my adult children.
The destinations were memorable.
But the greatest part of the trip was traveling with my grown kids.
Family travel changes as children get older.
When they are young, parents create most of the memories for them.
When they become adults, you begin creating memories with them.
Walking Manhattan together.
Figuring out the subway.
Choosing restaurants.
Laughing about the moments along the way.
Those are the memories that last.

Lessons learned from a weekend adventure in New York City.

Stay in Manhattan
For a short visit, the convenience is worth it.
Walk Whenever Possible
Some of the best moments happen between destinations.
Use Public Transportation
The subway allows you to experience more of the city.
Do Not Over-Plan
Leave room for unexpected memories.

Just plan charging around real-world conditions.
